Freaky Foods

I had two separate freaky food experiences this weekend:

First of all, Baby Boy convinced me to try sushi.  Here's what it looked like.

It tasted . . . interesting.  Baby Boy ate all of it, so I guess he liked it.

I don't think I'm cut out for raw . . . whatever that was. If anyone can enlighten me on that pile of green stuff and that folded mass of pinkish-orange meat-type substance, feel free.  As much as I consider myself a well traveled and fairly educated woman, I'm a simple meat-and-potatoes type eater.

Then, we ran out of the potatoes we grew in our garden, so we had to buy some from the store.  Imagine our surprise when THIS rolled onto the kitchen counter.

All together now, can you say GMO foods?

As you can imagine, we only needed one potato to feed all of us, LOL.

Until next time . . .

the green stuff is wasabi. HOT HOT HOT!!! and the pink stuff is usually ginger which is an aquired taste, but good with say like the aac roles, which is about as sushi as I get. LOL

Oh man, I so hear you on the sushi. The only thing I can squeak down is a California roll. Weird, because I like so many other types of ethnic food.
That potato is so scary you could have saved it for Halloween. How much did it weigh?

I don't mind vegetarian sushi, its quite nice. usually just has avacado in the middle. If that green stuff is wasabi, my goodness they sure packed it on. Those portions look huge, ours generally come in small sliced rolls. I guess seaweed is a bit of an acquired taste, its pretty overpowering in flavour.

I DETEST sushi! Everyone else in the house loves it.. EWW! We have sushi-go-round here. Basically you stuff your face with sushi for 100 yen a plate.

Wasabi is a must when eating sushi (or so I have been told)

The pickled ginger is YIKES.. When we first moved here my neighbor ( a wonderful Japan lady) took me out to the grocery store. I happened to see pickled ginger in a case and asked her what it was.. She asked the sales lady to let me taste it. The nice lady gave Aki and I both a chunk and Aki just put the entire thing in her mouth, so I followed suit! OMG! Needless to say I have not had a bite of it in 4 years, and don't plan to try it again any time soon...

Holy Potato BATMAN!

I only ever tried sushi once, many moons ago before I was a vegetarian and I did NOT like it. I simply don't "get it" I guess. I think people eat it to be cool or impress people they eat something raw. LOL I dunno. With all the good things out there to eat in the world, raw fish? Really? I do like the vegetarian CA rolls though that someone else mentioned...I buy them fresh made at a local market and they are yum, just avocado and veggies rolled in with the rice. Can't believe that potato! Wowsa!

Ahh - now you see, I am the type of sushi-eater who sticks with stuff like California rolls (cooked!) and cucumber rolls (veggie!). So, even though I do enjoy it on occasion, I wouldn't be quite so adventurous as to eat what appears in your photos!

Oooh you are brave. No way am I eating sushi unless it's a survival sort of thing. ;-)

Gotta try the cooked rolls. Most sushi restaurants have them. You'll enjoy them, I'll bet.
