So . . . What are YOU Eating?

Have you seen this movie? Mom #2 and I watched it last night. It's informative, enlightening, disturbing and unnerving.

All day long today, I've been mulling over the things I saw in the film and I think over the weekend I may watch it one more time before returning it to Netflix.

The ideas introduced in this film are not new and really not even news to me, as I've read The Omnivore's Dilemma (after an enthusiastic recommendation by RegularMom) and seen King Corn along with other informational resources regarding the food we eat. Something about the visual images in this movie, really have me rethinking every. single. thing. I eat and feed to my family.

We already try to stay away from processed foods because Mom #2 has high blood pressure and has also had her gall bladder removed and excess salt and fats are hard for her to digest. What really got to me were the images of the foods that are supposed to be healthy for you, can still really have hidden unnatural substances and just their very being have such an unnatural impact on the world we live in.

I know a lot of people on my blog roll already live an environmentally sensitive lifestyle, so I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but it's been on my mind today, so I couldn't go to bed tonight without posting something about this.

So, I guess this is a movie review, a public service announcement, meaningless meanderings . . . I'm not sure. Watch. Listen. Learn. Discuss.

Eat well.

Until next time . . .

Thanks for the tip, I'll put it on our netflix list. I'll probably make the kids watch it too, I made them sit through Supersize Me and then got in trouble because they had to watch it AGAIN in health class.

Mean Mom. ;-)

I have never heard of this movie.. I will have to check it out.
Yesterday I had a Cobb salad, thinking it was healthy. YEAH, its not. Not the Cobb salad at Chilis' anyway....

I've been afraid to see it for that reason. I tend to perseverate about what is (and isn't) in my food after reading anything along that line. I will though, because I know "it's our only hope."

I try first of all to focus on getting a variety and secondly to make sure that variety is generally fresh, unprocessed stuff. We rarely venture down the junk food aisle. Processed, prepackaged "meals" are only for those 12-hour long exercise days a few times a year.

We do our best to eat healthy and well.

Tonight it was taco chili. Mmmm.

We are supposed to go see this at the second run theatre tomorrow night. I can't wait. I've had it on my Netflix queue but there is still a wait. I also think there are some lesson plans on the film's website...
I try to buy local and organic whenever I can, don't even trust the veggies in the supermarket anymore and hate it when we have to eat them. Once you've gotten used to the real thing, it's hard to go back.

I don't know this movie, so needless to say I have never seen it.

I did however see that one gross movie on vegetarianism ummmm Fast Food Nation.

It basically states that eating beef and burgers supports illegal immigrants, child labour, unsafe working conditions and eating of fecal matter.

Then it tops off by showing us real life and graphic movies of cows be slaughtered and butchered.

I felt tricked and trapped.

Anyway, I still eat burgers.

But the point is that I am aware of the hidden nasties in foods, but sometimes I just don't care.

If I had it my way, I would only eat meat from cows I raised and veggies and fruit that I grew.

It is not be 100% organic, but I don't use chemicals or sprays that are not natural.

The unfortunate part is that I grew up in the US and sometimes I get cravings for Twinkies, 49 cent burritos from Taco Bell, Hostess Fruit Pies and ranch dressing.

The only solace, I suppose, is that I cannot get any of the above items here.

Have I gone off track? I don't feel like I am making a point... Did I make a point? Where am I?

As you know, I'm a big salad eater, but I'm lucky in that the closest grocery store to my house is a cooperative that gets most of its produce locally, and has strict standards from the packaged goods it carries.

We also have a terrific weekly farmers market within walking distance.

I kind of feel like I live in healthy food nirvana!

Yes we are military! :) And we live in Okinawa Japan. It is one of the islands near the mainland about a 2 1/2 hour plane ride from mainland Japan.

TERRIFIED to see this now. I already feel like our diet is getting more and more limited in Topsy-Techieland. If I see this, I'll probably have us on a bread and water diet for a month.
